🖤 Open Works #005 It's Alive

2 minutes of fuel to ignite your Open Org journey - shipped every 2 weeks.

🖤 It's Alive!! (again)

Greetings Pioneers!

Welcome to the fifth edition of Open Org’s newsletter and the 67 Progressive People People who joined since last time. If you’re reading this then three things are probably true:

  1. You don’t need convincing that transparency is good for business

  2. You can draw a hard-ass connecting line between leadership transparency and employee trust

  3. You want to learn, share, and contribute to a community that values openness and authenticity.

👉️ Quick reminder of what’s in the box?

So this is our fortnightly drop of tips, resources, memes, templates and insights from our small but mighty community of amazing People People trailblazing workplace transparency in the pursuit of a less opaque, less busted world of work.

"To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible we must be truthful."

— Edward R. Murrow

Ready to dive in?

Let’s go.

🎁 Free shit to make your life easier:

We went on a 🧙 quest to try and find the definitive transparent and authentic job ad. We failed.

Along the way though we did however find a ton of companies that did bits really well. So we created a monster. 🧟‍♂️

For those of you who remember the employee handbook of handbooks we created a few months back (lovingly known as ‘Franky’ to Adam and I, get it?!) we gone and done it again.

This time: 1000+ job ads, top 1% selected, stitched the best bits together and what do you get?!?!?

You get an example crammed MONSTER TEMPLATE aka ‘The Open Job Ad ‘ ofc :-)

Enjoy! 👇️

Some People People (especially y’all about to do some recruitin!)

Oh and by the by…that employee handbook of handbooks just got 45,000 check-outs 🤯 so if you’ve not seen it and are revamping yours…go check that out here.

Ain’t. No. Thang.

(it is. It’s a massive thang)

📖 OpenOrg #Build in Public

🎉 Adam and I have been pretty flat out working with the amazing folks of OOC#1 but in between the roundtables, firesides, coaching calls, career site reviews, employee handbook deep dives…we’ve also been trying to figure out what kind of community we need to build and also, ahem how to pay the bills.

So If you’re into the #nofilter version of what goes on behind the scenes of bootstrapping openorg.fyi whilst trying not to be shit husbands and rubbish dads, then you can check out our latest weekly public journal here ✌️

💡 Transparency Tip

(Leadership) teams, share your f’ck ups.

Not like this

🖐️ Stop: Assuming that your team only wants to hear about successes, achievements, and finalised plans. This one-sided communication can create a façade that everything is perfect, leaving people skeptical and disengaged.

👉️ Start: Providing a balanced view of the organisation. Don't shy away from discussing challenges, ongoing projects, and areas where improvement is needed. Be honest about what you're currently working on, where things aren’t where you want them to be and what is being done about it.

📚️ Interesting Internet

Things I find that i like. Hope you like them too:

  1. Book: Gamestorming - playbook of co-creation practices for facilitation inspo

  2. Template: Pyn’s manager template for post-layoff employee comms

  3. Post: Plain.com have a great post about their company values which we absolutely love

  4. Framework: Mark Eddleston’s New Ways of Working Playbook is an awesome collection of progressive org patterns and experiments. Notion Link

  5. Tool: Our friends at figures.hr have built a survey on salary increase budget (2023). Complete it here to get a copy of the report in Oct/Nov.
