🖤 Open Works #013 Open Source Drop: Pay Transparency Diagnostic

2 minutes of fuel to ignite your Open Culture journey - shipped every 2 weeks.

Greetings Pioneers!

Welcome to the 13th edition of Open Works and the 49 Progressive People People who joined since last time.

If you’re reading this then three things are probably true:

  1. You violently disagree with culture catfishing.

  2. You’ve already had at least one non-People person explain how you should do your job this year.

  3. You know trust is earned.

👉️ Quick reminder of what’s in the box?

So this is our fortnightly-ish drop of tips, resources, memes, templates and insights from our small but mighty community of amazing People People trailblazing workplace transparency in the pursuit of a less opaque, less busted world of work.

Ready to dive in?

Let’s go!

There really hasn't been a single situation where transparency hasn't been to our company's advantage.

We do it for fun.

We know…we really need to get out more.

🎉 Transparency Shoutouts

Adam and I have been long time fanboys of how DuckDuckGo do culture. We love their hiring process transparency.

IWD felt somehow empty without the Gender Pay bot wreaking havoc on the thousands of employer brands who celebrate women effusively on socials on IWD but do in fact very little when it comes to closing the gender pay gap. So it was good to see some Founders like Oliva’s Sançar Sahin take up the mantle and share the ins and outs of their gender diversity. 👇️

📖 OpenOrg #Build in Public

Pretty wild couple of weeks for us. We turned on the after-burners, got the coffee in and launched our micro-community for progressive people & talent folks.

We’ve made it a paid thing (£20pm) and we’re going to cap it at 500 members for a few different reasons:

  1. We want to pay monthly speakers a fair rate

  2. We want to make sure we’re building something valuable for the community. Ain’t no better signal.

  3. We don’t want it to become a noisy 10k slack community. These just aren’t valuable.

(Adam wrote some more about it here)

👉️ 67 folks have joined in the last 3 days in addition to the 50 or so folks who have completed one of our programmes.

Come on in and apply below if you’d like to be a part of it.

We’ve also been busy bees on the peoplemetrics.fyi front. We’ve had a pretty immense uptake during beta and also on the waitlist with now over 500+ People Leaders 🤯

Things we built:

  • Added 5 x new benchmarks

  • Integrated stripe

  • Made onboarding UX better

  • Made landing page a lil more swish 😉

gradient effect hover buttons are my jam…

If you want to get the people metric benchmarks you need to secure internal budget, make the case for change and give your investors the context they want. You can unlock a limited offer of £500+VAT for year 1 (60% discount).

💡 Tangible Transparency Tip

🖐️ Stop: Making and communicating decisions in a vacuum. The mystery surrounding how and why decisions are made can lead to confusion and mistrust within your team.

👉️ Start: Implementing a clear and transparent decision-making process. Make it standard practice to document and share the rationale behind significant company decisions. This could range from strategic shifts, hiring choices, to product roadmap adjustments.

🛠️ How: Develop a structured format for decision documentation that includes the context, alternatives considered, the decision made, and the reasons behind it. Then, share these documents in an accessible, centralized location.

How PostHog think about this sort of decision-making comms. I bloody love PostHog.

📚️ Interesting Internet

Things I find that I like. Hope you like them too:

  1. Book: The Happy Manifesto by Henry Stewart (speaking to the community next month, great read. 🤘)

  2. Template: Being a manager at Bene Bono - manager guidelines/accountabilities can be a little stale. This isn’t.

  3. Post: Luke O-Mahoney brought together all the goodness of PX Espresso ☕️ into one single beautiful location. Bookmarks ready….go!

  4. Framework: People Ops Org Diagnostic by Melissa Theiss, Melissa is currently doing OOF#1 with us and she shared this in a roundtable. It’s awesome and a great enabler and conversation starter. 🙇

  5. Product: Animstats - fun little product that does scroll-stopping animated GIFs/Videos, so if you need a lil jazz to celebrate something/someone on socials…got ya covered.

  6. Newsletter: ProductizeHR by Hernan Chiosso. A newsletter that explores the connection points between HR, Product Management, Agility, and Technology
